Steel Forging Traceability Checks Under ASTM A961

How to verify heat identity, heat analysis vs product analysis, mechanical test evidence, and RFQ requirements when buying forged flanges to ASTM A961 and A105.

Why ASTM A961 Is the First Traceability Reference

ASTM A961/A961M-25a is not a standalone product grade. It is the common-requirements specification for steel flanges, forged fittings, valves, and parts used in piping applications. For an EPC buyer, traceability begins before a single flange is assigned to a line number: you must know which product specification governs the forging, and how A961 applies to it. The specification says the applicable product specification and the common-requirements specification should be read together where the product specification invokes it. If a requirement in an individual product specification conflicts with A961, the individual product specification prevails. This is not a formality; it changes which chemical, mechanical, and heat-treatment evidence you can demand.

Which Product Specifications Invoke A961

The A961 scope lists the product specifications it supports: A105/A105M carbon steel forgings for piping components; A181/A181M general-purpose piping forgings; A182/A182M alloy-steel flanges, fittings, and valves for high-temperature service; A350/A350M notch-tough carbon and low-alloy steel forgings; A522/A522M nickel steel flanges, fittings, valves, and parts for low-temperature service; A694/A694M high-pressure transmission service forgings; A707/A707M low-temperature service flanges; A727/A727M carbon steel forgings with inherent notch toughness; and A836/A836M titanium-stabilized carbon steel forgings for glass-lined piping and pressure vessel service. When any of these are ordered, the corresponding product specification and A961 must be treated as a pair.

Reading A961 With A105/A105M

A105/A105M covers forged carbon steel piping components for ambient- and higher-temperature service in pressure systems. Included are flanges, fittings, valves, and similar parts ordered either to purchaser dimensions or to dimensional standards such as MSS, ASME, and API specifications. The A105 extract gives two useful boundaries: forgings are limited to a maximum weight of 10,000 lb [4540 kg]; larger forgings may be ordered to A266/A266M. Tubesheets and hollow cylindrical forgings for pressure vessel shells are not covered. Also, while some piping components machined from rolled bar and seamless tubular products are covered, raw material produced in those forms is not. A buyer cannot assume that any forged component automatically meets A105; the product form and manufacturing route must fit the scope.

Heat Identity and Analysis Evidence

Traceability in A961 revolves around the heat. The extract defines the heat in two situations. If primary melting is required, it must incorporate separate degassing or refining, and may be followed by secondary melting such as electroslag remelting or vacuum remelting. If secondary melting is employed, the heat is defined as all of the ingot remelted from a single primary heat. This definition matters when you review mill test certificates: you need to see whether a secondary melt was used and whether the reported heat identity reflects that route.

Chemical composition is verified by two distinct analyses. Heat analysis is used to determine the percentages of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, titanium, tantalum, copper, cobalt, nitrogen, aluminum, vanadium, and cerium to meet the required chemical composition. Product analysis is used to determine whether the chemical composition conforms to the product limits. When you inspect a material test report, ask the mill or manufacturer to identify which values are heat analysis and which are product analysis. A flange may show heat analysis from the original melt and product analysis from the finished forging; both are part of traceability.

Mechanical Test Evidence

A961 states that mechanical tests are performed to determine hardness, tensile properties, and impact properties. A105, as the product specification, adds that forgings must be subjected to tension, hardness, and hydrostatic tests, with the latter applicable only when required. Material must adhere to tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, reduction of area, and hardness requirements. Heat treatment is also central. A961 lists procedures such as full annealing, solution annealing, isothermal annealing, normalizing, tempering, post-weld heat treatment, and stress relieving, applied as specified in the individual product specification. A105 states that materials shall be subjected to annealing, normalizing, tempering, or quenching. If the certificate does not state the heat treatment cycle, you cannot verify that the forging met the product specification.

Procurement Checks and RFQ Inputs

Put the following in your RFQ and purchase order:

  • Exact standard editions: for example, ASTM A105/A105M-26 and ASTM A961/A961M-25a. Confirm the editions current at the time of order; standard pages are updated and older editions may have different requirements.
  • Whether SI or inch-pound units apply. A105 is expressed in both systems, and unless the order specifies the M designation, material is furnished to inch-pound units. Values from the two systems are not exact equivalents and must not be combined.
  • Supplementary requirements. A105 and other product specifications provide supplementary requirements that apply only when individually specified by the purchaser. If you need extra testing or inspection, state it in the order; a supplier cannot apply them unilaterally.
  • Heat identity and analysis expectations: request heat analysis and product analysis per heat, and state whether secondary melting is acceptable.
  • Heat treatment requirements: request the actual treatment and, if needed, the heat treatment parameters.
  • Product form and weight: confirm the component falls within A105 scope and that the forging weight is within the 10,000 lb limit or that the alternate specification has been agreed.
  • Marking and certification fields: because A961 marking and certification details are not fully quoted here, specify the exact fields you require and verify them against the purchased edition of the standard and any supplementary requirements.

Inspection and Documentation Points

When the material arrives, or during third-party inspection, check:

  • Material test certificates against the ordered standard edition and the order supplementary requirements. The standard store extracts note that supplementary and purchaser requirements can change the required evidence; a certificate that was valid for one project may not be valid for yours.
  • Heat analysis and product analysis values, and confirm that each reported heat relates to the melting route defined by A961.
  • Mechanical test results, especially hardness and tensile properties, and ensure that heat treatment is documented.
  • Dimensional standard references, such as MSS, ASME, or API, if the order used them.
  • Product marking, but verify the exact marking requirements from the current standard text rather than relying on general practice.

Common Risks in Forging Traceability

  • Mixing editions: a certificate referencing an outdated A105 or A961 edition may miss new requirements.
  • Omitting supplementary requirements: if you need Charpy impact testing, ultrasonic examination, or other extras, they must be written into the order.
  • Confusing heat analysis with product analysis: both are needed for full traceability, but they serve different purposes.
  • Assuming bar or tubular product is in scope: A105 covers some components machined from those forms, but not the raw material itself.
  • Combining SI and inch-pound values: doing so can result in non-conformance with the standard.

Because the A961 extract does not include the complete marking and certification requirements, a buyer should obtain the current standard text and confirm every field with the supplier before acceptance. If you are sourcing forgings, make traceability a contractual requirement, not a post-shipment hope.
